Guest Mix - The Breakbeat Junkie & Plugg

Here’s another round of mashup biz from The Breakbeat Junkie & Plugg. Very creative and versatile track selection here. No doubt this required some serious lab time. Kurtis Blow's DC go-go inspired track, "Party Time" is a standout moment in this mix. To this day, KB is one of the only mainstream hip-hop artists to give props to go-go - a rare but important funk sub-genre. Growing up in DC, I have a decent collection of early 80s go-go records. I'm thinking a go-go mix on illJazz needs to happen soon.
Ok..back to the mixtape at hand. Other highlights: the Candy Dulfer and Public Enemy blend; the Magic Touch and Stetsasonic blend; The Meters (you can't go wrong!); Chunky Billy; Funkhouse Express, etc. Very solid production all around. Expect to hear more of Ant & Plugg on illjazz soon.

This latest mixtape is a bit scattered. No real focus or inspiration - I just pulled a bunch of tunes and tried to make it work. Some of my favorites are in here, so if you're not feeling the entire playlist, at least check out these tracks: "Dis-information," Lanu's broken beat soul cut, is absolutely killer. "Helpless" by Decaff (aka DJ Noir) has one of those addictive rhythms that never tires. And if you slept on the 80s classics "Cool" by The Time and "I'm Freaky" by O'Bryan, then definitely take a listen. Also check out this Soul Train clip of O'Bryan. Damn!

Guest Mix - The Breakbeat Junkie & Plugg
To stream, click the Real Audio, iTunes, or Windows Media Player icons. To save to iTunes or other Mp3 software, right click on the download link. Save the file to your desktop and then drag it into iTunes.
Here's a tight mix from Ant (aka The Breakbeat Junkie) and Plugg -- two DJs from the UK. These dudes have collaborated on over 6 mixes together, but they've never actually met or spoken. All of their production is digital and Web-based.
Normally, I'm not a fan of heavily-edited mixes, but this is an exception. Listen to "The Message" blended with Bongolia -- it's super seamless and natural. A lot of these edits and transitions can't be done with vinyl alone, which is why digital mixing is starting to get my respect. It opens up a lot of creative possibilities, and this mix is a good example of what can be done.

Ursula 1000's third offering on illJazz is a hard-hitting breaks mix with a retro vibe - lot's of beeps, distorted bass, cheeky rave synths, and 90s hip-hop references. The stand-out track is easily Product.01's mix of Electrik Boogie, but the whole thing is slamming.

Ursula is back with another killer mix on illJazz. It's on the funky breaks side of things, but as always he draws on everything from hip-hop to reggae to rock. One thing that's consistent - it's packed with floor-friendly party beats that appeal to even the biggest electronic music skeptics. If you haven't already, definitely pick up his latest LP, Here Comes Tomorrow, which contains the cuts Boop, Hello! Let's Go To A Disco, Electrik Boogie, etc. And look out for the Fort Knox Five and Product.01 remixes of Electrik Boogie soon. Let's see if they can top the Minneapolis-influenced madness that Ursula constructed the first time around. Hard to top!!

This one's kind of all over the place. Just a bunch of tunes - new and old - that I'm feeling at the moment. It's a bit more on the party tip than some of my other mixes. Sidenote...while visiting my aunt/uncle last Xmas, I discoved the Rick James track hidden away with a bunch of old LPs in their basement. Who knew the familia could be so funky??

What is the sound of Airloom? Sexy vocals, funky pumping basslines, saxophones, live percussion and uplifting, hands in the air, dance floor vibes. This is the sound of Airloom.
I first met brothers Corey and Todd (better known collectively as the DJ duo Airloom) back in 2001 when they were spinning at a lower east side spot called Bauhaus.
Some friends and I randomly walked in, only to be surprised with a setting I hadn't experienced in awhile. They were serving up quality house music just the way I like it - funky, deep, and discofied. And the crowd was energetic and absolutely loving it. What more could a house junkie ask for?
With NYC's reputation as a house music capital, you'd think this vibe would be easy to come across. Unfortunately, these days it's few and far between. Sure, there are a handful of big name djs keeping things going (Francois K, Neil Aline, Timmy Regisford, E-Man, etc), but when it comes to soulful, floor-rocking house that is guaranteed to move a dancefloor, I have to say that Airloom is among the top.
Since they came onto the scene, Airloom has electrified audiences throughout the East Coast with their sound. Their 1-year residency at Bauhaus was just the beginning. Soon, offers from the biggest party promoters in the city started pouring in, and they launched a hectic DJ schedule playing on a regular basis at some of the hottest house music spots, with some of the most notable DJs. It was not too long before they landed jobs on the decks at venues such as Cielo, Lotus, Pacha, Marquee, Guesthouse, Crobar, Bed, Dirty Disco, Cain, PM, Sol, and Le Souk, playing alongside the likes DJ's Axwell, Mark Farina, Jamie Lewis, DJ Disciple, Ian Carey, Andy Caldwell, Jon Cutler, Pete Moss, Jojo Flores, and Felix Da Housecat.
If you are a fan of labels like Defected, Soulfuric, Buzzin Fly, Mixture, Mn2s, and Onephatdeeva, you will definitely like Airloom's style.
Airloom currently holds a weekly residency at Le Souk in NYC's alphabet city. Check here for dates and other upcoming performances.
