Here's a tight mix from Ant (aka The Breakbeat Junkie) and Plugg -- two DJs from the UK. These dudes have collaborated on over 6 mixes together, but they've never actually met or spoken. All of their production is digital and Web-based.
Normally, I'm not a fan of heavily-edited mixes, but this is an exception. Listen to "The Message" blended with Bongolia -- it's super seamless and natural. A lot of these edits and transitions can't be done with vinyl alone, which is why digital mixing is starting to get my respect. It opens up a lot of creative possibilities, and this mix is a good example of what can be done.

Ursula 1000's third offering on illJazz is a hard-hitting breaks mix with a retro vibe - lot's of beeps, distorted bass, cheeky rave synths, and 90s hip-hop references. The stand-out track is easily Product.01's mix of Electrik Boogie, but the whole thing is slamming.

Ursula is back with another killer mix on illJazz. It's on the funky breaks side of things, but as always he draws on everything from hip-hop to reggae to rock. One thing that's consistent - it's packed with floor-friendly party beats that appeal to even the biggest electronic music skeptics. If you haven't already, definitely pick up his latest LP, Here Comes Tomorrow, which contains the cuts Boop, Hello! Let's Go To A Disco, Electrik Boogie, etc. And look out for the Fort Knox Five and Product.01 remixes of Electrik Boogie soon. Let's see if they can top the Minneapolis-influenced madness that Ursula constructed the first time around. Hard to top!!

This one's kind of all over the place. Just a bunch of tunes - new and old - that I'm feeling at the moment. It's a bit more on the party tip than some of my other mixes. Sidenote...while visiting my aunt/uncle last Xmas, I discoved the Rick James track hidden away with a bunch of old LPs in their basement. Who knew the familia could be so funky??

Guest Mix - Ursula 1000
To stream, click the Real Audio or Windows Media Player icons. To save to iTunes or other Mp3 software, right click on the download link. Save the file to your desktop and then drag it into iTunes.Ursula 1000

This month brings the first in a series of guest mixes that will be featured on illJazz.
Kicking it off is NY-based DJ/artist Ursula 1000, who has one of the freshest musical styles out there. One part funk, one part lounge, one part breakbeat...stirred in with a little house and hip-hop influence. This mix only offers a small glimpse of Ursula 1000’s sound, so if you’re in the NYC area, I highly recommend that you make a trip to APT to hear him live. Otherwise, check his DJ schedule as he plays all over the world.
The man behind Ursula 1000 is none other than the mild mannered, multi-instrumentalist Alex Gimeno. Alex's style evolved and transitioned from the sophisticated & hip background score provided by his father, a renowned member of the 50's Latin orchestra, Los Chavales De Espana, to the heady rock, punk, disco, funk and electronic dance music of his generation. Alex smoothly moves back and forth between musical styles from the glamorous Jet Set era to frenetic electronica. Alex cannot be boxed in, categorized or labeled, his music is a multi-leveled eclectic blend of styles and genres. Finding a label to house this eclecticism could be tricky. Lo and behold came the smart and highly respected Eighteenth Street Lounge Music label, operated by Washington DCs Thievery Corporation.
In addition to his monthly residency at APT in NYC, you can catch Alex dj-ing his transcontinental grooves at discothèques worldwide and for fashionistas like Prada, Issey Miyake, Hugo Boss, Miss Sixty, Fiorucci, H&M, Diesel and Christian Dior.
Alex has just released his latest studio album entitled, Here Comes Tomorrow, where he explores a mind meld of jazz, electro, latin, swing, ska, bossa nova, hip hop, psychedelia and glam rock. Featuring guests such as LOS AMIGOS INVISIBLES, CRISTINA (of ZE RECORDS fame), MEMBERS OF GENTLE PEOPLE, QYPTHONE, CABARET NOIR, TOWER OF POWER, and MISTY ROSES.
